BELTON, Texas (KWTX) The Academy Bumblebees couldn't record a shutout of the Rogers Eagles for a fourth straight year, but they got the job done in a 7-6 victory Thursday night.
In a sluggish first half for both teams, Academy (1-0) scored the only touchdown by either side in the first 24 minutes with a 1-yard quarterback sneak on 4th-and-goal by Treyton Bates.
On the opening kickoff in the third quarter, Rogers (0-1) began a comeback attempt by recovering a fumble to set up the offense in great field position. Billy Riley's 23-yard touchdown run brought the Eagles closer, but a failed 2-point try kept the advantage in favor of Academy.
Following a few defensive stops, Rogers started moving the ball better than in the first half, but Academy's defense stood tall in the fourth quarter, including a stop on 4th-and-2 on one drive, and forcing a fumble on what turned out to be the Eagles' final possession.
