KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) For Kileen Senior Tia Harston, school is a balancing act. She works hard in order to excel on the basketball court, and stand out in the class room.
"I feel like it's all about timing. You put time in here at practice, and you go home and have to do your work," says Harston.
And there's little doubt that this week's Classroom Champion's ability to balance would make even a champion gymnast blush. the National Honor Society Member carries a 3.5 G.P.A. and even with her commitment to academics, she's found time to make the All-District team all four years. She also helped her team to the fourth round of the state playoffs this year, which she says was especially rewarding.
"Just, like helping the program grow more. Each year, we get better and better, so being a part of that is great."
And head coach Latisha Williams has been happy to have her.
"She's definitely a standout. I mean, just her physical ability on the floor and the way she handles her business in the classroom. As a coach, I couldn't really ask for much more."
Tia has managed to parlay her success in the classroom and on the court into a full ride to play basketball this fall. She continues to impress those around her in the community and most of all, her family.
"I feel like I'm doing a really good job of making them proud, making everyone in my family proud, and putting my name out there," says Harston.
Williams thinks that her point guard's accomplishments motivate other's around her.
"I know that a lot of the freshman look up to her, I mean she's going to Sam Houston State on a full scholarship, and a lot of the kids around here, they want to do those things."
She's also doing her part to mold a younger generation in the community, volunteering to help out at area basketball camps.
"Whether it's just me talking to them, or actually getting on the court with them, doing different things, I can say I helped them," says Harston.
Tia plans to major in business management, and hopes to enter the fashion industry after graduation.
