Mart wins 6th state title with 34-21 win over Refugio

ARLINGTON, Texas The Mart Panthers are state champions for the 6th time, beating Refugio in the 2A state title game Wednesday night by a 34-21 score.

Refugio scored the first 14 points of the championship game before Mart responded. Mart made a gutsy response scoring 3 touchdowns to finish the first half. One came on a fake field goal where Jace Terry hit Shatydrick Bailey for a touchdown to tie the game. The Panthers took a 21-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

It was more of the same for the Panthers in the second half. Led by Terry and Jalon Kirven, the Panthers made big plays offensively. Terry and Kirven hooked up for a big 4th down conversion then a touchdown in the same drive to lead 28-14.

Terry also made a big play with his legs, scoring the game's final touchdown on a 64-yard run in the 4th quarter.

The 34-21 win by Mart gives the Panthers the 6th state championship in the history of the program.
