TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) In a battle of the unbeatens, the Midway Panthers picked up their third win of the season with a 40-28 victory over the Temple Wildcats.
Temple (2-1) struck first with a 33-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Rumfield to Xavier Johnson before James Fullbright's 1-yard scamper allowed Midway to tie it 7-7.
Tanner Mordecai added his own 1-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to give the Panthers a 14-7 advantage.
With a chance to extend the lead in the second quarter, Mordecai's pass was tipped and intercepted by Markel Reed, who returned it 75 yards for the game-tying touchdown.
Midway (3-0) broke a 14-14 tie after halftime with a 16-yard touchdown run by Marcus Johnson.
Following a 77-yard touchdown connection between Mordecai and Demarcus Degrate, Temple bounced back with back-to-back touchdowns -- a 17-yard run from De'Jon Overton and a 15-yard pass from Rumfield to Xavier Johnson.
But the Wildcats' 28-27 lead was short-lived. Mordecai helped the Panthers go on top with a 41-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Williams, and Marcus Johnson's 2-yard rush iced it for Midway.
