The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's softball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 3 University of Texas at Tyler Thursday evening in Belton, falling 7-1 and 7-2. The wins improved the Patriots to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Cru fell to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in league play.
UT Tyler opened the game with a one-run lead when Nicole Garcia scored off an RBI single from Ashley Perez. The Patriots added four more runs in the top of the second, scoring one off an error and three off a home run from Victoria Gonzales. UT Tyler held a five-run lead until the fourth inning when Nicole Garcia and Hannah Moore scored. UMHB scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jessica Picou scored off an RBI single from Linsey Tomlinson. Four Crusaders recorded hits for the Cru while Picou was the lone scoring runner. CeCe Darilek took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits with one strikeout. Karen Tennis pitched in relief, going 3.2 innings with just three hits allowed. Colleen Bentke earned the win for the Patriots, pitching a complete seven innings with four hits, one run and one earned run allowed. UMHB totaled one run on four hits with two errors while the Patriots had seven runs on eight hits with one error.
The Patriots once again opened the contest with a five-run lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first and three in the top of the third. Andrea Gonzales opened scoring with an RBI single to score Nicole Garcia before Andrea Gonzales scored on a wild pitch to put the Patriots up by two. Ashley Perez followed that with a three-RBI home run in the third to give UTT a 5-0 lead. The Patriots added one more run in the fourth inning before the Cru scored two in the bottom of that inning. Hannah Wolfe put UMHB on the board, scoring off an RBI single from Kasi Cummings before Tomlinson reached home off an RBI single from Whitney Flournoy. The Patriots added one more run in the top of the fifth to secure the 7-2 win. Makenzi Dawson and Hannah Wolfe led the Cru with two hits each while Kasi Cummings and Flournoy each recorded RBI. Hannah Halepaska took the loss for UMHB, giving up five runs on six hits in two innings of work. Tennis again pitched in relief, surrendering seven hits and just two runs in five innings. The two combined for five strike outs and did not walk a batter. Whitney Romero earned the win for the Patriots, going 3.2 innings with five hits and two runs allowed. Miranda Leal earned the save, pitching 3.1 innings with two hits and no runs given up. UMHB totaled two runs on seven hits with no errors while the Patriots had seven runs on 13 hits with no errors.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, March 2nd in a 1 p.m. match against the Patriots at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
