WACO, Texas (KWTX) If Ish Wainright wanted another tune-up before Big 12 play, he won't get that chance.
According to Baylor head coach Matt Rhule, the senior tight end will miss the game against Duke Saturday because of an illness.
It's another blow to the offensive depth for the Bears (0-2). Senior tight end Jordan Feuerbacher missed the game against UTSA because of a broken hand, and is doubtful to play this weekend.
"This is bordering on the comical at this point," Rhule said. "It is what it is."
Already without their top two running backs -- JaMycal Hasty and Terence Williams -- Baylor's true freshmen in the backfield, led by Jon Lovett, will have to step up yet again.
Sophomore Zach Smith will be the starting quarterback this week. Senior Anu Solomon is in concussion protocol and completed just 38% of his passes for 121 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the 17-10 loss to UTSA.
Through two games, Baylor has been one of the worst FBS teams converting third downs, and confidence to turn that number around might be low considering how well Duke has played defensively. The Bears are ranked 120th out of 129 teams on third downs (26.1%), while the Blue Devils are fourth in the nation in third down defense, allowing just three conversions in 22 attempts (13.6%).
