(Press release)

Following the recent announcement of an ultra-high speed broadband network by GoogleTM, the City of Copperas Cove is partnering with surrounding communities by participating in a regional response to the Google Request for Information (RFI) to be submitted by the Central Texas Council of Governments (CTCOG) on behalf of the region. The Central Texas region will seek to be included in one of the selected trial areas for this broadband service.

Google, one of the largest companies in technology, is searching for "test" communities in which to launch ultra-high speed broadband networks. The Google technology, named “Fiber for Communities”, will deliver Internet speeds over 1 gigabit per second, which is more than 100 times faster than most broadband access today. The broadband access will feature fiber-to-home and business connections.

This is an opportunity that will have tremendous benefits for residents, businesses and the community has a whole. The City encourages residents and community groups to get involved with this effort and respond to the Google RFI. Residents can visit http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi, click 'Get Involved' then nominate CTCOG (includes Copperas Cove) for the process by filling out the short form, which only takes a few minutes.

There is no application fee associated with filling out the form and Google has indicated that it will not seek financial assistance from the winning community or communities.

For more information, contact the City of Copperas Cove at (254) 547-4221. More information on the Google plans for broadband access can be obtained at http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi.

Yeah, I'm astounded that copperas cove is involved in this, we can't get street lights on inhabitted streets but we sure can pump up internet access. I'm curious how much $$$ copperas cove will get in the drug deal.

I wouldn't get too excited about this. True you may get a 1 Gb connection to your home or business but much of the internet backbone will not support that kind of bandwidth.... YET!
