Walmart halts gun, ammunition sales to customers younger than 21

(KWTX) Walmart announced Wednesday it will no longer sell guns or ammunition to anyone younger than 21.

The company said it will update its processes as quickly as possible to make the change.

Walmart also announced that it is removing items from its website “resembling assault-style rifles, including nonlethal airsoft guns and toys.”

“Our heritage as a company has always been in serving sportsmen and hunters, and we will continue to do so in a responsible way,” the company said in a press release.

Walmart ended the sales of modern sporting rifles including the AR-15 and doesn’t sell handguns except at stores in Alaska.

The company says it also goes beyond what federal law mandates by requiring customers to pass a background check before a firearms purchase.

“The law would allow the sale of a firearm if no response to a background check request has been received within three business days, but our policy prohibits the sale until an approval is given,” the company said.

Earlier Wednesday, the Dick’s Sporting Goods chained announced that it will restrict firearms sales to customers younger than 21, but the announcement did not mention ammunition.
