Veteran Actor Dead At 93 Save Email Print

(March 26, 2008)--Richard Widmark, who played a giggling killer in the 1947 thriller "Kiss of Death," has died after a long illness.

He was 93.

His wife says the actor died Monday at his home in Roxbury, Conn.

She did not disclose the illness.

After a career in radio drama and theater, Widmark made a sensational film debut as Tommy Udo, who delighted in pushing an old lady in a wheelchair to her death down a flight of stairs.

The performance won him an Academy Award nomination as supporting actor.

A quiet, extremely shy man, Widmark often played killers, cops and Western gunslingers, though he said he hated guns.

He and his wife had a daughter, Ann, who was married to baseball legend Sandy Koufax.

He played Jim Bowie, in John Waynes "The Alamo" and did an outstanding job. God bless him and his family.
