(April 9, 2008)--Director-choreographer-dancer Tommy Tune will be honored with a lifetime achievement honor at the 2008 Fred & Adele Astaire Awards.
The Texas native has directed such Broadway musicals as "Nine," "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," "My One and Only," "Grand Hotel" and "The Will Rogers Follies."
He'll be the first stage star to earn the trophy, which recognizes excellence in dance on stage and in film.
The lifetime achievement prize has been renamed The Douglas Watt Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of theater critic Douglas Watt.
Tune, 69, was born in Wichita Falls and attended Lamar High School in Houston before going on to study at the universities of Texas and Houston.
He has won nine Tony Awards and will direct "Turn of the Century," a world premiere that will be part of an ambitious 2008-2009 season at Chicago's Goodman Theatre.
The Astaire awards gala will be held June 2 at Manhattan Center Studios.
Winners will be announced in May.
