(May 8, 2008)--"American Idol" alum Kellie Pickler performed at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday in her red heels as part of GrandRally, an event that highlights the plight of grandparents raising grandchildren.
Pickler was raised by her grandparents after her parents separated when she was 2-years-old.
“My grandmother was like my best friend. I called her mom. She was amazing,” Pickler said.
Grandma Pickler passed away when Kellie was 15, but Pickler says she saw firsthand how grandparents struggle with suddenly becoming parents again.
“Kids are expensive,” she said.
Meantime, Pickler says she's in the middle of recording a new album, which she says is a better reflection of her and her life.
She says, "A lot has happened in the past two years ... It's kind of like an update."
She says the album has a more personal touch.
"I get a lot more say in this record. I'm a lot more involved. It is a lot more about me,” she said.
