(July 21, 2008)—Former Beatle Paul McCartney is hoping the free concert that he gave Sunday in Quebec to celebrate the city's 400th anniversary is being seen as a "show of friendship" between Britain and French-speaking Quebec.
A number of Quebec nationalists opposed McCartney’s participation in the weekend birthday celebration because they said his presence evokes painful memories of Britain's conquest of Quebec in 1760.
McCartney told Radio-Canada that it's time to "smoke the pipes of peace" and bury the hatchet.
He said he had been working on expanding the few lines of French he used in the 1965 hit "Michelle" as part of the concert.
McCartney said, "Come on Quebec-ins (Quebecers), love me baby."
The open-air concert was his only scheduled appearance in North America this year.
