(July 22, 2008)--Actress Estelle Getty, the co-star of the TV show “The Golden Girls,” died early Tuesday at the age of 84.

Getty’s son, Carl Gettleman, said his mother died early Tuesday at home in Los Angeles.

Gettleman says she suffered from advanced dementia.

The diminutive actress spent 40 years struggling for success before landing the role of a lifetime in 1985, playing the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on "The Golden Girls."

I loved Estelle Getty. She was one funny lady on The Golden Girls. It is still an all time favorite of my family. She will be greatly missed in the entertainment world.

I loved The Golden Girls--Sophia reminded me so much of my late mother in law, very quick-witted and sassy. May they both rest in peace!

WOW! She was my favorite likewise. She had one liners that were awesome. I thought she was older also. She was so cute! My prayers are with the family.
