(August 12, 2008)--The executive director of Columbia University's Miller Theatre has been named general director of The Dallas Opera.
Both groups announced Tuesday that George Steel will begin his new job on Oct. 1.
He'll lead the company into its new home, the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts.
The opera house is set to open next year.
The company's inaugural performance, Verdi's Otello, starring tenor Clifton Forbis, will be Oct. 23, 2009.
Steel is a 41-year-old Maryland native and Yale graduate who's a conductor, composer and impresario.
The search for a new general director began last fall, following the resignation of Karen Stone.
