(August 20, 2008)—Dave Matthews Band saxophone player LeRoi Moore has died of injuries suffered in an all-terrain-vehicle accident in June, the band’s publicist says.
Publicist Ambrosia Healy says Moore died Tuesday at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles.
He was initially hospitalized in late June after the accident on his farm outside Charlottesville, Va.
Moore had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin physical rehabilitation when complications forced him back into the hospital.
It was Moore whom Matthews credits with putting the group together and arranging many of his songs.
The band was in Los Angeles when he died, preparing to play a two-night stand at the Staples Center.
When word of Moore's death came, there was a question whether the band would perform, but the show did go on, with Matthews and the group taking the stage, with Jeff Coffin of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones performing in Moore's place, as he has been since the accident.
Matthews told the audience about Moore's death, saying, "It's always easier to leave than be left."
On the stage, as a tribute to Moore, was a saxophone sitting on a stool, bathed in a spotlight.
