(November 21, 2008)—Country singer Pam Tillis says performing for wounded veterans at Walter Reed Medical Center "wakes up a lot of compassion" in her.

She said she met a wounded veteran's mother whose son missed the show because he just got out of surgery.

Tillis said the veteran’s mother came up to thank her after the show, and Tillis said, "no, no, no, no, no, thank you."

The point of the visit was also to talk about songwriting with the veterans, and Tillis says she was glad to see a lot of budding songwriters in the group because, "any kind of writing really can be a healing tool."

She says experiences like these have shaped her politics, and they've shaped the things she cares about in the world.
