LOS ANGELES (May 11, 2009)--Guitarist and songwriter Stephen Bruton has died in Los Angeles at 60.

Bruton, who with Kris Kristofferson for nearly 40 years, had songs recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett and others.

Services are pending in Fort Worth for Bruton who died Saturday of complications of throat cancer.

Bruton died at the home of musician-producer T Bone Burnett, who said Bruton recently finished working with him on a movie called "Crazy Heart."

Bruton was born in Wilmington, Del., but moved to Texas when he was about 2 and became a musical prodigy.

He won banjo contests before he was a teen and eventually shifted his focus to country and blues.

The Texas Christian University graduate joined Kristofferson's band, as the singer-songwriter's own career was about to take off.
