NEW YORK (July 22, 2010)--The cast and crew of Broadway's "The Lion King" are coming together for a bone marrow donor registration drive for an 11-year-old actress in the show.
Shannon Tavarez was cast in the starring role as Nala, but istead of performing, she was in a hospital in April undergoing chemotherapy after she was diagnosed with leukemia.
Shannon needs a bone marrow transplant, but hasn't found the perfect match.
The search is daunting because her mother is black and her father is Hispanic and there aren't as many minorities and people of mixed ancestry registered as potential donors.
Broadway stars from "Wicked" and other shows will attend a donor registration drive Friday to let people know getting on the donor registry involves just a cheek swab.
