10.10.2012 Applications For 6th Annual Free Tree Giveaway Due Friday

TEMPLE (October 10, 2012)-Temple homeowners can apply to receive a free tree from the Temple Parks and Leisure Services Department through the A Tree for Me program.

A Tree for Me aims to help place trees across the City.

Over 100 trees will be given away on October 20.

"Trees can provide share, reduce overall air conditioning costs for your home, and benefit the environment. Our goal is to build more of a tree canopy in Temple," said City of Temple Arborist Val Roming.

Trees offered this year include Crepemyrtle, Bald Cypress, Chinquapin Oak, Texas Mountain Laurel, Live Oak, Possumhaw Holly, Red Bud, Red Oak, and Vitex trees.

All of the trees are grown at the City Tree Farm and are drought tolerant and native Texas trees.

The Tree Farm was established as part of a 2005 Texas Forestry Services grant.

The trees given away for A Tree for Me are large, about four years old.

Officials say it is best if participants can bring a pick-up truck or trailer to take the tree home.

Applications are available at the Parks and Leisure Services facilities and can be downloaded online.

Once completed, applicants must return the application by fax, mail, or in person to the Temple Parks and Leisure Services Administration Building, located at 1909 Curtis B. Elliott, by October 12 at 5 p.m.

A limited amount of trees will be given away.
