4.11.2011 Personal Records Of Millions Of Texans Made Public

(April 11, 2011) - Records of about 3.5 million people including personal identifying information were inadvertently placed on a publicly accessible server, but there’s no evidence the information has been misused, the Texas Comptroller’s Office said Monday.

The comptroller’s office will begin sending letters this week to those whose personal information was disclosed.

The records included names, mailing addresses, Social Security numbers and “to varying degrees” other information such as dates of birth and driver’s license numbers “embedded in a chain of numbers and not in separate fields,” the comptroller’s office said Monday.

The comptroller’s office has set up a website that provides information and beginning on Tuesday will operate a special 24-hour toll-free line at (855) 474-2065 that people can call to determine whether they’re receiving notification letters.
