8.22.2012 New Website to Help Understand Where Your Tax Money is Going

AUSTIN (August 22, 2012)--Comptroller Susan Combs unveiled a new website Wednesday that’s designed help Texans better understand who’s taxing them and for how much.

The site includes an interactive map of all of the state's 254 counties and allows taxpayers explore sales and property taxes collected by the state, county and city or town where they live.

It also tracks other levies from such entities as transit authorities or special purpose districts created to collect taxes for projects including infrastructure improvements.

Combs said in an interview Wednesday that many Texans don't understand how much borrowing their own communities engage in and then have to raise taxes to pay off.

She said the site is part of her office's continuing effort "saying these citizens are paying everybody, federal, state, county, city."
