“Flat Stanley,” a paper doll used in a pen-pal program, propped at the edge of an Iraqi winter wheat field near the Al-Qyarrah pump station compound, the Tigris River source of water supplying Contingency Operating Location Q-West. Third-graders with Cheryl Hays’ Discovery class at Mooreville Elementary School, Mooreville, Miss., sent the paper doll along with cards and letters to members of A Company, 2nd Battalion, 198th Combined Arms, 155th Brigade Combat Team, a mechanized infantry unit out of Hernando, Miss., that provides security for missions to the pump house.

Mississippians mark six months securing Q-West entry control point

A .50 cal. machine gun overlooking an entry control point at Contingency Operating Location Q-West, Jan. 10. The ECP is manned by members of A Company, 2nd Battalion, 198th Combined Arms, 155th Brigade Combat Team, a mechanized infantry unit out of Hernando, Miss., that provides force protection to Q-West. This day marked the unit’s sixth month of ECP operations. There have been no security breaches during their tenure.

Air Cav crew chief returns home after 20 years

Sgt. Nicanor Garcia, from Killeen, Texas, an AH-64D Apache attack helicopter crew chief in Company B, 4th Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, left his native Panama in 1989 before the invasion by the U.S. Army and didn’t return until 20 years later.

Spc. Krystal Juarez, a mail clerk assigned to Company A, Division Special Troops Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, sorts letters during the holiday rush in the division mail room on Camp Liberty. According to Juarez, daily mail has nearly doubled since around the end of November.
