BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers seized weapons and munitions caches as they continued conducting operations to increase security in the greater Baghdad area.
A local sheik turned in a munitions cache to Soldiers with the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, at approximately 1:30 p.m. July 6 in Tarmiyah. The munitions consisted of a bag of homemade explosives, an improvised-explosive device, homemade grenades, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, a mortar tube with base plate, a 120 mm mortar, 60 mm mortars, small-arms rifles with silencers, 10 14.7 mm rounds, a drum of 7.62mm ammunition and two cases of 7.62 mm rounds.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. July 7, Soldiers from the 22nd Brigade, 6th Iraq Army Division, found an explosively formed projectile, four sealed canisters of CS gas, an improvised claymore device and two pounds of unknown explosive in Kadhamiyah. An explosive ordnance displosive team took possession of the munitions and transported them to a MND-B base.
“Taking these weapons out of the hands of extremist elements was achieved through the combined efforts of a local leader, the Iraqi Army and MND-B Soldiers,” said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, spokesman, MND-B and the 4th Infantry Division. “Our combined efforts demonstrate the success of our unified goal: safeguarding the people of Iraq.”
