GATESVILLE (February 28, 2010)—A 34-year-old Gatesville woman died of a gunshot wound to the back and her 19-year-old boyfriend was arrested and charged with murder after a domestic disturbance turned violent Saturday night.
Police Sunday identified the victim as Nicha Jolene Cox.
Curtis Tyler Lunsford, whom police identified as her boyfriend, was in custody, charged with murder.
Coryell County Justice of the Peace Larry McDonald set Lunsford’s bond at $500,000 on Sunday afternoon.
Police and paramedics were sent to Cox’s apartment in the 100 block of Surrey Lane just minutes before 8 p.m. Saturday after a caller reported a shooting.
Officers quickly took one man into custody outside an apartment and other officers and emergency medical technicians attempted to revive the injured woman but were unable to do so.
The Gatesville police chief and a crime scene technician arrived at the apartment just after 8:30 p.m.
McDonald pronounced Cox dead at 10:40 p.m. Saturday.
Evidence at the scene, McDonald said, indicated Cox was shot with a 12-gauge shotgun from a relatively close range.
He ordered Cox’s body sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science, at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, for autopsy.
