WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (November 9, 2009)--Reynolds American Inc., the maker of Camel cigarettes, is in talks to buy a Swedish company that helps people quit smoking, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper reports the second-largest U.S. tobacco company is considering whether to buy Niconovum AB, which sells such nicotine-replacement products as gum and spray outside the U.S.

The paper says David Sweanor, a Canadian law professor and tobacco expert, said people close to the talks briefed him, and the deal could be worth $44.5 million.

The company's Web site says Karl Olov Fagerstrom, an expert on smoking cessation and nicotine dependence, formed the company in 2000.

Sweanor, Niconovum and Reynolds American did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

I am still at a loss as to why the government allows something to be sold that is shown to kill people and at best cause health problems for everyone involved including nonsmokers and poor little kids sitting next to mom or dad inhaling 2nd hand smoke. Tobacco has caused me marital problems from day one. Quit? My wife has tried every product known to man including the very expensive ($130 a month Chantix). Nothing works. As soon as she quits the Chantix, she gets the urge and then she is hooked and smoking like crazy to catch up. How can the company making the product then sell the product to stop them. That sounds like they want to buy the company and then simply destroy it so people will smoke more. It is funny too that insurance companies will not even partially cover any sort of stop smoking aide. why is that when surely they get hit with the bills from smoking / health related issues?

IF THEY ALTER THEIR CIGARETTES TO KEEP SMOKERS ADDICTED WHO CAN SAY THEY WOULDN'T ALTER TREATMENTS TO KEEP SMOKERS ADDICTED. SOUNDS LIKE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
