SAN ANTONIO (September 9, 2013)—A standoff that started Monday morning at a motel in downtown San Antonio after a police officer was shot while responding to a family disturbance dragged on for nine hours before it ended late Monday afternoon.

The man suspected of shooting the officer was barricaded in a first-floor room of the two-story motel, but was taken into custody at around 5 p.m. Monday.

He was armed with a rifle.

The injured officer was struck in the head by a shot fired through the door after responding to the disturbance.

He was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center and is expected to survive, authorities said.

Two downtown schools were locked down because of the standoff and about a dozen people were evacuated from the cordoned-off motel.
