(September 25, 2007)--Three inmates have escaped from the Nacogdoches County Jail.

Sheriff's officials identify them as 24-year-old Marcuese Eugene Tyler, 32-year-old Jose Guillermo Portillo and 20-year-old Antonio Martinez.

Investigators believe the trio slipped through an unsecured door, went through a recreational area, over two fences and then out of the jail complex.

Further details on the inmates were not immediately available.

The escape comes a day after a short-lived, but deadly escape attempt by two state prison inmates.

The two inmates traded gunfire with officers after bolting from a work detail and wresting weapons from a pair of guards, stealing a truck and running down one of the guards who was on horseback, killing her.

Both inmates were captured hours after their escape from the Wynne Unit prison work detail near Huntsville.

John Ray Falk had been serving a life prison sentence for murder.

Jerry Martin was doing a 50-year stretch for attempted murder.

But both had been classified as minimum-security prisoners based on their good disciplinary record and were assigned to do field work outside the prison under the supervision of officers.

Now, prison officials say they'll at least be charged with felony escape.

It hasn't been determined yet what charges they'll face in the death of the 59-year-old corrections officer Susan Canfield, but they could be charged with capital murder.
