Forecasters Keep A Close Eye On Two Developing Storms
Forecasters were keeping a close eye Wednesday on a tropical storm that’s nearing hurricane strength and on a tropical depression that’s about 200 miles off Mexico’s Gulf Coast.

(September 26, 2007)—The National Hurricane Center was issuing advisories Wednesday on both Tropical Storm Karen and on a tropical depression that has formed about 200 miles east-southeast of Tampico Mexico.
Also forecasters say a weak area of low pressure has formed near Key West, Fla. that has the potential for development over the next several days as it moves toward the northeast over South Florida.
Tropical Storm Karen was near hurricane strength Wednesday morning as it churned more than 1,200 miles east of the Windward Islands.
The storm is moving toward the west-northwest at about 13 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds near 70 miles per and higher gusts.
Meanwhile Tropical Depression 13 was over the southwest Gulf of Mexico about 200 miles east-southeast of Tampico and 135 miles east of Tuxpan, moving south at about 3 miles per hour.
Maximum sustained winds were about 25 miles per hour with gusts 35 miles per hour and slow strengthening is possible over the next day, forecasters said.
It’s expected to reach tropical storm strength Thursday.
