WACO (August 17, 2010)—Prosecutors began questioning witnesses late Tuesday afternoon in the manslaughter trial of Trena Mitchell, 39, who's charged in the traffic death of Waco biker Richard "Hat Trick" Schroeder last year and testimony continues Wednesday.
Schroeder, 45, was riding with a group of bikers on a Christmas toy run in December when authorities say Mitchell, who is legally blind, failed to yield at a stoplight at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Lake Shore Drive.
Her car struck his motorcycle as she pulled into the intersection to make a left turn.
Schroeder was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he later died.
Two Waco police officers who investigated the deadly crash testified Tuesday about the statements Mitchell gave them after the accident.
She told one officer she had a green light and didn’t know where the motorcycle had come from.
The other testified that she told him that she had a green light and thought she could make a left turn before the motorcycle entered the intersection because she had plenty of time.
The officer said she told him Schroeder must have gotten there faster that she expected because he was speeding.
A four-man eight-woman jury was seated for the trial Tuesday afternoon and lawyers presented opening statements starting at around 4 p.m.
While jury selection was underway, about a dozen bikers were gathered outside the McLennan County Courthouse and as many as 25 were seen riding around the courthouse during the day.
Mitchell originally pleaded guilty in May to one count of manslaughter and asked for deferred adjudication probation, but 19th State District Court Judge Ralph Strother rejected the plea deal, denied the motion and set a date for a trial.

My heart goes out to the family of the biker, in a time of giving his life was cut short, we all have to be carefull of our brothers and sisters on the road on bikes, I have given aid to a biker who lost control, I myself enjoy the freedom of a bike, and I myself have almost hit one WATCH YOUR BLIND SPOTS..In this case it comes down too the defendent not being a responisble person, mother. She had no right to be driving and she knew that. I think the jury will be blind in color only to find that she was guilty.. Again my heart goes out to the family , God bless
Unbelievable, now her children testify she was in the right! What is right about endangering everyone on the road while driving legally blind? And to top it off the defendant is already playing the race card. Let us hope and pray that justice is not blind and the jury sees thru this families lies and deception.
There were 4 passengers in the car with Ms. Mitchell. Her 18 year old niece and mother of the injured infant was licensed to drive. The other 2 passengers were her own children. They were on their way to a 'Baby Shower'. Yes, she is collecting SSI payments monthly for being legally blind and no, she doesn't have a drivers license as legally blind people don't qualify. If she can see well enough to drive, her SSI payments should cease. Yes, the race card was played, unfortunately, this woman's noble race has been reduced to a 'get out of jail free card'. The funny part about this, is the motorcycle community deliberately withheld revealing anything about race because it wasn't an issue. Her disregard for the law was the issue. She definitely needs to see the inside of a cell if for no other reason than shock therapy. The motorcycle community has watched her house these past few months to document if she continues to drive. I understand she has continued to drive.
