(October 1, 2007)—The trial of DeMarcus Ridge, who’s charged in a 2005 murder, was postponed Monday after Ridge’s attorney stepped down.
Ridge was scheduled to start this week in state district court in Waco, but his defense attorney discovered that one of the state’s witnesses was a former client.
Russ Hunt, Jr. of Waco was appointed to represent Ridge, but the start of the trial was postponed for about six weeks.
Ridge and another man were arrested in January 2006 in connection with the August 2005 shooting death of Mark Anthony Watkins, 33.
An officer who was monitoring traffic in on Elm Street found Watkins after hearing several gunshots.
The officer saw several hundred people running in the street and several cars leaving the area as he turned his patrol car around to investigate the gunfire, police said.
The officer radioed for backup because the crowd was growing hostile, police said.
Paramedics were also dispatched to the scene, but had difficulty reaching the victim because of the crowd, police said.
