On August 31, 1968—42 years ago today—famed Texas surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey and his team performed the first multi-organ transplant in Houston, using several organs from one donor for four patients. DeBakey, who joined the Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston in 1948, is considered the father of modern cardiovascular surgery, pioneering such now-common procedures as heart bypass surgery and inventing a host of devices to help heart patients.

President George W. Bush, who viewed the devastation from Air Force One, pledged to do "all in our power" to save lives and provide sustenance but cautioned that recovery of the Gulf Coast would take years. Some 1,000 people were killed when a religious procession across a Baghdad bridge was engulfed in panic over rumors of a suicide bomber.
