KILLEEN (September 1, 2010)—Police Wednesday said the woman who was struck and killed on Aug. 11 as she walked along a Killeen roadway has been identified as Dr. Yvonne Chan, 52, who was a physician who had recently moved here from California.

“While it is believed that the deceased is Dr. Yvonne Chan, a positive identification through print comparison continues,” police said in a brief statement Wednesday.

Chan was not carrying any identification when she was killed and last week police released a sketch in hopes that someone would recognize her.

Dong Soo Kim, of the Korean American Association of Killeen, was among those who worked to try to determine the woman’s identity, going door to door in search of answers.

Kim said Chan moved to Killeen from Sacramento, Calif., to work at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood.

"The Korean Asian community is relieved. Her identity is finally known,” he said.

Chan was walking south along Old FM 440 Road in Killeen just after 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 11 when a southbound 2007 Dodge Nitro struck at the intersection with Clairidge Avenue.

The driver of the SUV was unable to see her, police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

To the anonymous write who posted on Sept 2: Your lack of sensitivity is astounding. Accidents are called exactly that for a reason, and blaming the victim is not only ridiculous, it's disrespectful to those who knew and loved her. You may have been warned about train tracks and other "dangers" as a child, but it is clear to me that your education was otherwise lacking. In case you weren't aware, "little buddy," bicyclists (yes - it is spelled bicyclists and NOT bycyclers) are not allowed to ride on the sidewalks, as those are intended for pedestrians only. In addition, there are many streets where there are no sidewalks available, and joggers have no other option but to exercise in the street. Think before you judge others, and most importantly, keep your negative thoughts to yourself, as no one else has interest in being privy to them.

to anonymous. what you said is true and valid and people do need to be more careful when running or biking. however, the way in which you said it is unbelievably crass and insensitive. yvonne was my aunt. she was a person with family and people who cared about her. we are all destroyed by this tragedy. imagine finding out that your relative died and has been lying in a morgue for almost a month. i decided to google her today to find out more about what happened and your comment was one of the first things i saw. this was a horrible tragedy for everyone involved and i find it completely unnecessary to add injury to insult.
