Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst repeated Tuesday that they are willing to address school finance reform before the start of the regular legislative session in January.
But Perry and Dewhurst want lawmakers to come up with a plan
that has a chance of passage.
Perry called a special session on education finance in April, but it
fizzled without passage of a new plan.
On Sept. 15, a judge in Austin ruled the state’s current share-the-wealth school system is unconstitutional.
The state plans to try to appeal the ruling directly to the Texas Supreme Court.
Dewhurst says that, given a choice, he'd much rather solve
school finance now than wait for the 2005 regular legislative
session
But Dewhurst also says he believes that lawmakers, even in the
regular session, can come up with a new system to pay for public education.
