(October 18, 2007)—A tornado spun off a volatile weather system in the Gulf of Mexico Thursday and slammed into Pensacola, Fla, injuring at least five people as it damaged buildings including a daycare and a shopping mall.

Daycare employees ushered children into the kitchen area before the tornado hit.

The children suffered only minor injuries, officials said.

The tornado also leveled a house in which eight people were watching news coverage of the approaching storm.

All eight survived, but one was injured in the collapse.

The twister stripped tiles from roofs and blew out windows.

Trees and power lines were downed.
