Twenty years ago today in 1987, the US Senate voted 58-42 to reject the Supreme Court nomination of Robert H. Bork, in the process creating a new verb, “borking,” which is used to refer to organized campaigns (that may or may not involve distortions of fact) against nominees or candidates for various posts. Depending on which side of the debate you’re on, it’s either a pejorative, or a word that describes a legitimate use of power.
