Tuesday Marks Waco War Hero Doris Miller’s 85th Birthday
Tuesday is the 85th birthday of Waco War hero Doris Miller, the U.S. Navy Mess Mate who manned a gun during the attack on Pearl Harbor and downed as many as five Japanese planes, according to some reports.

World War II hero Doris Miller was the U.S. Navy Mess Mate who manned a gun on the USS West Virginia during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, downing as many as five enemy planes, according to some reports, although Miller himself later told officials he thought he hit just one.
Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for his gallantry, although some supporters have continued to work to try to convince the Navy to award Miller the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Miller died on Nov. 24, 1943 during the battle of the Gilbert Islands, when his ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Pacific Ocean.
Tuesday would have been his 85th birthday.
The Navy later honored Miller by naming a dining hall and a destroyer escort for him.
In Waco, a YMCA branch, a park a cemetery and an elementary school all bear his name.
