(November 14, 207)—A "celebration of life" for country singer Hank Thompson is planned for Wednesday at the Fort Worth honky-tonk Billy Bob's Texas.
Thompson died of lung cancer on Nov. 6 at his suburban Fort Worth home.
He was 82.
Thompson died just days after canceling his tour.
Thompson grew up a fan of movie idol Gene Autry, which fueled his love of the guitar.
By the time he finished high school he was playing on a local radio show in Waco, where he was billed as "Hank the Hired Hand."
Thompson had 29 hits reach the top ten between 1948 and 1974.
His album "The Wild Side of Life" reached number one in 1952.
Some of Thompson's most famous songs include "Humpty Dumpty Heart" and "A Six Pack to Go."
The last show Thompson played was Oct. 8 in his native Waco.
Gov. Rick Perry and Waco Mayor Virginia DuPuy declared that day “Hank Thompson Day”.
Thompson’s family planned Wednesday’s celebration, which begins at 2 p.m. at Billy Bob’s Texas.
