(November 15, 2007)--A gasoline tanker truck exploded in flames Thursday on Interstate 35-E northwest of Dallas in a crash that left two people hurt.
The fire was out Thursday evening, but traffic backups remained and officials said the fire could have damaged the road surface, which could mean more than just temporary delays for commuters and highway travelers.
The fiery wreck in the Hickory Creek area caused black smoke to tower over the area north of the Lake Lewisville Bridge.
Authorities say the driver evidently failed to see traffic slowing on I-35, took evasive action and hit a car.
The Department of Public Safety says the trucker then lost control and the rig burst into flames after hitting a concrete retaining wall on the inside median.
Authorities say one witness reported seeing a man on fire jump out of the cab.
That person and another truck occupant were transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.
Their conditions weren't immediately released.
The I-35 wreck shut down traffic in both directions.
Hickory Creek is about 30 miles northwest of Dallas.
