(November 16, 2007)—Meridian-based Double B Foods Inc. is recalling about 98,000 pounds of frozen sausage roll products because of concerns about listeria contamination.

The recall includes H-E-B brand sausage and kolache products.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the frozen sausage rolls were produced between Oct. 25 and Nov. 6.

In addition to being sold in Texas, the products were distributed to institutions, catalog sales and distribution centers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

The company says there have been no reports of illness.

“We’re taking the recall very seriously,” said Director of Human Resources and Safety Rick Borden.

“Our first primary concern is the safety of our consumers who purchased the products,” he said.

“We are working closely with the FDA a number of corrective action steps.”

Consumption of food containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause
listeriosis, a rare but potentially fatal disease. It's particularly dangerous for babies or people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

This story is beyond ludicrous. 49 tons of these products have been recalled when no illness has been reported? Listeria is rampant and definitely fatal? Babies are actually going to eat this product? The average American's immune system hasn't already been lowered enough by our increasingly unhealthy national compulsive obsession with germ proofing the world? Just amazing!
