(November 21, 2007)--Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Texas law enforcement is providing an online tracker of stolen property.

Trace.com is a subsidiary of MyThings Incorporated.

It's collaborating with the Texas Police Chiefs Association, the Texas Department of Public Safety and more than 500 local Texas police and sheriff's departments in providing the service.

A DPS statement says the database includes all identifiable property reported to the FBI as stolen by Texas police agencies.

The statement says Trace.com will allow shoppers to buy with confidence from online auction sites, antique dealers and pawnbrokers.

Trace.com was founded and based in Europe and already is partnered with more than half of the police forces in the United Kingdom and numerous international law enforcement organizations.

Texas is its first U.S. law enforcement partnership.

Users can access the database free of charge to research items before purchase, to report recently stolen property and to create secure, anonymous inventories of valuable property that could help in recovery if items are stolen.

“Trace offers Texans a new method to fight theft-related crime,” said Chief Melvin Martin of the Abilene Police Department and president of the Texas Police Chiefs Association.
