(November 26, 2007)--The mother of a toddler believed to be the girl whose body washed ashore in Galveston Bay says she and her husband beat and tortured her child to death.
Investigators in Galveston say they're "fairly confident" the unidentified body found last month in a plastic storage bin is 2-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers.
Authorities had dubbed the child: "Baby Grace."
An attorney for the mother, 19-year-old Kimberly Dawn Trenor, says the child is Riley and the woman is cooperating with authorities.
The mother's statement to officers obtained by KTRK television indicated she and her husband Royce Clyde Zeigler II beat and tortured her daughter to death in July.
She says the couple, from Spring, kept the body in a storage shed before they put it in a plastic bin and dumped it into Galveston Bay.
A fisherman found the bin on Oct. 29.
Riley and Trenor are charged with injury to a child and tampering with evidence. Bail is $350,000 apiece.
The girl's father is from Ohio.
Meanwhile the Ohio grandmother of a missing 2-year-old girl wants to know why the child is dead.
Sheryl Sawyers raised the motive issue Monday at a news conference in Mentor, Ohio, outside Cleveland.
She says the claim of the missing girl's mother that a social worker from Ohio had taken the baby in Texas didn't make sense.
