Crews Will Remain At Scene Of Massive Plant Fire Through The Night Save Email Print

A | A | A

(December 5, 2007)—The fire that gutted a 300,000-square-foot school library furniture manufacturing company in Belton was under control Wednesday night, but fire officials said crews will remain on the scene as flames continue to flare up.

At the height of the fire Wednesday, more than 60 firefighters from 11 departments battled the flames at Indeco Sales at 805 East 4th St. in Belton.

Wednesday morning, flames were shooting a hundred feet into the air and the fire produced a towering cloud of smoke that was visible for miles.

Tanker trucks hauled water to the fire scene from as far away as Fort Hood to bolster the effort to contain the flames.

Embers from the burning building ignited a number of small grass fires in the area, which residents and police officers quickly extinguished.

The fire broke out shortly before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and spread quickly through the building.

The owner of the company says it appears a board got stuck in a dust removal system on a paint line, sparking the fire, but fire officials said an official investigation won’t begin until the last of the flames are doused and the remains of the building are stabilized.

Students from nearby Tyler Elementary and Waskow High School were moved to Sparta Elementary School as a precaution.

The company manufactures oak, maple and laminate furniture for school libraries.

The owner said he will continue to pay the 100 employees of the plant through Christmas and said he plans to rebuild, but he’s not sure exactly when or where.

A preliminary estimate set damages at $10 million.

I have worked as sub fixing the cnc equipment for many years. The Mays family have ALWAYS treated me like gold and have Always appreciated me, as I have them. I'm certainly grateful for not only the business, but more importantly the friendships. From the comments, Lee's kindness has far outreached even more than I could have imagined. I certainly hope they can get back on their feet soon (as I know they will) and will be glad to help in any way possible. I know many people disliked Byron and will try to slander him, but the fact is, they just couldn't handle the job. Just in case the losers that posted negative comments don't understand, some of the ingredients of success are hard work, leadership, determination....terms you simply don't comprehend. I'm certain that the Mays' will bounce back from this "bump" in the road.

We met Mr Mays over twenty years ago and his Reputation, Character, Salesmanship and Integrity inspired us to pursue a career in the furniture industry. We wanted to be associated to an industry with such high caliber individuals. He always treated us with dignity and respect. The people of Belton should be grateful to have such an incredible and courageous individual that engaged in such a large endeavor. His company stands out as an example for the rest of us, all of us, regardless of our industry. We have been impressed with their success over the decades and wish them the best as they rebuild. Our thoughts and prayer go out to our friends at Indeco Sales. EXITO!

I find it interesting that most of the negative statements posted by people like "Justin" in Temple or "anonymous" are riddled with misspelling's. More than likely made by individuals with little or no education who may have been more suited for employment at swap meets or Dysentery Stool-Sample Analyzer. The opinions that matter will come out in the future and it is way to early to start pointing fingers or laying blame for what was initially an accident.

First, this is a terrible tragedy for the community. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected. Next, as a licensed engineer specializing in fire protection, this incident interests me greatly. Can any of the firefighters here explain what happened when the connection was made (presumably at the FDC) to support the sprinkler system?

Our family also owns a Library Furniture company and our Hearts and Prayers are with this family and employees. It is your worst nightmare what has happened to this fine Family!!! This town of Belton will be a support group like no other-after reading alot of the good comments. We are also Christians and know that God has a plan for this family and town!God Bless!!

I would just like to thank each and every fire department, restaurant, the Salvation Army and other businesses who came to help us in our time of need. I'm not going to waste my breath on the negative comments, but I will gladly thank the rest of your for your kind words and support. The Mays family has lost a lot, and so have the Maco employees. I feel really terrible for everyone. These are really great people. They've treated me as one of their own. I'm thankful to work for such wonderful people.

I cannot believe the stuff that comes out of people's mouths. Instead of whining and crying about how bad things are (or were) you should be making arrangements to help these people relocate, rebuild or get re-employed. I have known the Mays family for over 35 years and have never known a more giving, caring and respected family in the entire Educational Furniture Industry. God bless and protect them and their employees during this horrible time. Get off their back and on their side. I imagine there are dang few of you who have ever seen their life's work go up in flames before your very eyes. Believe me, it is like watching part of your family die.

We too are in the same industry as Indeco Sales, and are located in So. Calf. The Mays family and associated companies have more decency in their little fingers than most folks will have in their lifetimes. These are genuinely ethical people who conduct themselves as such, and have been for years, the nationwide leader in the school furniture industry. Anyone who really knows them knows this is true. Thank God no one was hurt. My guess is they will be back bigger and better than ever. Best of luck to the Mays families and all employees. Chin up !!

Posted by: Noelle Location: Belton on Dec 6, 2007 at 11:19 AM
To all those people stating that the Mays' have made huge donations to the Fire Dept., how would you know? Do you have the documentation to prove it? If you do, then please go to the nearest TV station and hand it to a reporter so the rest of us can see it, as I am very curious to see if it was worth the payoff to lose over 10 million dollars in inventory, property damage and contracts. To the others that stated that they tried to call other agencies regarding poor working conditions, you are a bitter bunch of pathetic people. You probably got fired and you are still angry with the company and will do anything to make yourself look good. Shame on all of you. I hope you feel better about yourselves now that you have put somebody else down. Your insecurities are showing and it is not pretty.

We responded to this scene first to assist by covering the city when Belton recd the call and then to the scene for numerous hours. This was a big fire, and I assure everyone that all was done in order to First PRESERVE LIFE and then Property!!! God bless all the local businesses that came out to support our efforts on scene by supplying food and water. Also I would like to thank the Dispatch Center the FIRE Dispatchers did an AWESOME JOB!!! My thoughts and prayers are with the owners and their employees during the holiday season. I hope that they will consider rebuilding in our area as the economy will definitely suffer with a loss of business.

We are a School Furnishings company in arizona and have been associated with our friends at Indeco sales for 20 years. Indeco sales and Mr. Mays(thats right this man commands so much respect in the industry that he is still referred to as Mr. Mays by everyone in the industry today) are one of the single largest independently owned and operated school furniture companies in existance today and the people of Belton should be grateful to have such an employer in their town. In an industry that is being attacked by larger national chains this company stand out as an example of how to do it right. We have been benchmarking their sucess for decades and after they rebuild will continue to do so. We have many friends at Indeco Sales and we pray for them all during this trying time. To all of our friends at Indeco and the Mays family God bless and good luck.

All i have to say is job well done to the firefighters and everyone else. My husband is a ff and everytime that they called to a fire or whatever the case may be I am always praying for him. I pray that the Firefighters the May's family and the people that worked for them. It is just amazing to me at how people are trash talking in this time of need. We are supposed to be a community and help out not step on people when they are down! We live in such a cruel world as it is. my heart goes out to all the people involved in the fire and my heart goes to out to the Firefighters.!!! Happy Holidays.

I am praying for all families involved. Reading some of the horrible comments below makes wish there wasn't a "post your comments section" at all. Some people just want to stir up trouble and kick people when they are down. My family owns a business and I am surprised by the rumors that are said about our family. Employees may be joking, but then some believe the joke to be true and it escalates. Don't believe what anyone says unless you can verify it yourself. Good luck employees of INDECO and the Mays family. We are praying you will all survive this tragic situation and rebuild soon!!

I grew up in Belton, I'm concerned - whats the update? Have the flames been put out? Is it done? How's the family? What about the surrounding businesses? How are those today? And the schools? How far did the fire spread? I'm glad no humans were hurt.

Posted by: kandice Location: somewhere in texas on Dec 6, 2007 at 07:39 AM
well this is a tragedic mess, but after reading all these comments below it has made me realize how so many people are quick to throw blame if im not mistaken we have a choice in everything we do...if we dont like the situation we are in ..well change it..so many people these days are always wanting more and not taking time to count the blessings that they already have..say you had a flat tire on the way to work...well your gonna grip and complain that that was the last thing you needed this morning well what if that flat tire kept you out of car crash and saved your life you would look at it diffrently..right? this world has changed so much there is so much hate and not enough love

Posted by: Micheal Location: Temple on Dec 6, 2007 at 06:14 AM
Seems that most of the people that are kicking the Mays while they are down are putting in as anonymous if you are so big and brave put a name with it or shut up! There is probably a reason you dont work there anymore but I doubt it has to do with the safety!

Posted by: Micheal Location: Temple on Dec 6, 2007 at 05:56 AM
All of the people that want to kick someone while they are down need to shut up!! I know the Mays and know they are Christians and good people. They run a factory and I can say that most factories are run in the same manner. It was an accident and nothing more. I can also say that they are more worried about the employees than the factory. I know that the LORD will take care of the Mays and you will hear them say the same thing. Coming from someone that is in EMS I say Thank You to all of the hard working Firefighters and Volunteers that work a thankless job and people that know absolutely nothing about anything popping off and showing just how ignorant they truly are! My prayers will be with the Mays and the employees as well as the Firefighters and EMS personnel that will be there for you when you call in your time of need! Thank You!!!!!

Furthermore, I am disappointed in these naysayers in our community that obviously thrive on defaming a man and his family when they have just spent an entire day witnessing their livelihood engulfed in flames. I remind you that this is a family that gives an enormous amount to the surrounding communities, this includes schools that your children attend, your churches, your salvation army and charities in your community. I was at the site most of the day and I promise you I never heard one of them speak selfishly of their own amenities, but I did hear concerns for employees and their well-being especially with the holidays approaching. I know that Lee will take care of his employees and his thoughts and prayers will be with them rather then for himself. I wish we could all be so selfless.

Posted by: Nicky Location: Temple on Dec 6, 2007 at 12:58 AM
You know, my mom has worked for Indeco and the Mays' for 21 yrs. Lee Mays is a caring Christian man and I have never known him to turn away anyone in need. It's hard to find a family as caring as the Mays family. I will not attempt imply that everyone in the family is perfect or that the establishment is flawless and meets "everyone's" standards; however, I've never known any situation where "everyone" is even satisfied, much less thinks everything is PERFECT! I just can’t understand how EVERY employee was able to escape injury if this was such a dangerous and toxic establishment. It seems that the entire structure would have exploded immediately with all of the contamination that you speak of. None-the-less, I am excited about these perfect families and irreproachable employers that we have right here in our community. I have yet to meet them, so I can't wait for these cynics to introduce us to their flawless families and immaculate employers so we can all have a glimpse of utopia.

My family has always been proud to call Bell County home and seeing such massive support from the community is touching. My grandfather (Lee), dad (Jerry) and uncles (Lynn and Byron), as well as many other family members and employees have worked hard to build this company. To see something that they've put their whole lives into burn to the ground can be crushing, but knowing our grandfather, he is trusting God and will build something positive. This family loves this community and has always tried to give back to the schools, churches, and various other organizations. I have heard nothing from my family but praise for the firemen who risked their lives. Many immediate areas were spared because of their quick response. They said the Salvation Army was awesome helping out in any way they could, as well as Schoepf's and other restaurants and businesses. When the opportunity arises, please, please, please, help out the employees with a kind word, meal, or monetary gift if you can.

I dont know what is wrong with all you people. Instead of being concerned about the folks that lost their job and all the kids that were evacuated; all yall can do is grip about things you did not change when you could have if I reading right. Instead of all of the BS yall stop and pray for these folks, and be thankful no one was hurt. GOD dont like uguly.Be thankful none of our children were hurt. Now stop griping there is enoung of that in this world as it is. Pray for all the firefighters out there all day and all nite. May God Bless them all they are doing a great job.

I was a firefighter for the City of Belton. Here are 2 things I never observed or was part of: businesses receiving a thorough annual fire inspection, (much less a follow up inspection for violations), and annual hydrant tests. There's documentation that will appear to show both. But most of them will have been 'pencil whipped'. The condition of hydrants, hydrant flow (gallons per minute), and hydrant pressure remain poor and unpredictable. There's no reason a city Belton's size with a proper functioning water main grid should have to 'truck in' water from other municipalities.

Lee Mays is one of the most decent and caring people I have ever met. I bet he makes sure all of the employees are taken care of for the holidays. Knowing Lee, he is already working on getting things up and running again. He is not the type of man to stay down long, no matter how many folks dog him and talk trash. He helps other and donates because he cares. He doesn't do this for all who think he is trying to "buy" people. Also for all who are judging him from his family, you should never judge the entire tree by one bad apple.

Not one person or firefighter was hurt today - no fires spread - Total loss - but property loss can be accepted - a human life - a lot harder to accept - All the Firefighters did a fine job today

Posted by: ProudMemberOfBeltonFD Location: Belton on Dec 5, 2007 at 09:27 PM
No one takes bribes in the Belton Fire Department. I and other members of the BFD risked our lives today by making an interior attack when we got battle ready. We attempted to put this fire out. Unfortunately we didn't and had to retreat to protect surrounding exposures. If you want to put us down for doing a job few want to do - go ahead. We'll do the same for you if need be and you can continue to put uws down. I appreciate the help from every fire department that came to help. Troy, Temple, Moffett, MPR, Copperas Cove, Fort Hood, Nolanville, Stillhouse, Harker Heights and SW Bell County (Both of them) and the many members of the Belton Volunteer Firefighters - and lets not forget the city workers that helped pull hose. If you don't like living in our fine city, find another place to live. I also feel for the workers and owners. All the complainers here tonight should be thankful for what they have this Christmas - their families..

I too have known the Mays family for most of my life. They are a wonderfully generous family. I have no experience with the facility in question, however, if things were overlooked on inspections, it has nothing to do with Mr. Mays' donations accept that the powers that be (read city government and other officials) overlooked them voluntarily. IF, and I stess IF, there were violations that needed to be corrected and no citations were written, it's nothing that none of the other large employers in Bell Co. (read Scott & White, McClanes, PFG, Wilsonart) aren't just as guilty of. But once again, it's not that these businesses are "bribing" anyone, it's the city officials not wanting to cause any fuss with the business. Assuming there were violations, the blame for those violations falls on the city officials who failed to cite the business. If you are inspected annually, and you pass every year, why would you worry about these violations that accordign to the inspectors, don't exist?

I am really glad everyone got out safely. No one should have to go through this right before Christmas!

This is an awesome family! So Sorry that more people can't see the true generosity that this man and his family have shown over all of the years, donating land and money for OUR children. They have touched many lives in a positive manner. They deserve more respect! I'm disappointed in the negativity towards such wonderful people. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family and staff.

I have known Lee Mays, his children and grandchildren for 20 years. He has given with out wanting notice to many groups, churches, and folks in need. I have been in the plant, seen over a million in improvements including a paint system that required no respirators due to it never entered the air. For an old building, it was in fair shape due to his upgrades. You folks that are kicking a man while he is down are pretty sorry lot. It is time to come together and help the folks that will be out of work for the next few months. It takes up to 6 months just to build some of those machines which are made in Germany. We will be looking at a benifit for these workers and ways to help out. Mr. Mays is more worried about his employees than the loss of a building. Negative comments about this company will not help those folks that worked there.

Posted by: anonymous Location: belton on Dec 5, 2007 at 05:41 PM
i'm glad they are wearing masks now. sounds like things had improved since I was there. That's what I hoped for. Time passes and things change.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Belton on Dec 5, 2007 at 05:21 PM
I know for a fact that the Belton Fire Department has never received HUG donations from the owner. And no one at the fire dept. has ever taken any kind of bribe! When an inspection is done on a business, the inspector gives a list of violations found and the business has so many days to fix the violations. Then a 2nd inspection is done. If the violations are not corrected then a citation is given. If however a company "fixes" the violations then no citation is given. That doesn't mean the company can't turn around the next day and "unfix" whatever it was. If the employees feel its an unsafe working environment they have options. If you get no where with OSHA, call your local fire dept. or your local code enforcement dept. and complain (Belton has both). If there are enough complaints someone will do something. I know both Belton and Temple Fire Depts. have done suprise inspections on businesses before. It was an unfortunate accident and I hope there are no injures to anyone!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Belton on Dec 5, 2007 at 05:05 PM
Please pray for all the families of the 100 plus employees that work there who are out of jobs this Christmas and might not have jobs after. My husband has worked there 2 years. The sprinkler system went off when the fire started. Theory is a wood board got stuck inside the dust collector and sparked and when they tried to pull it out it got sucked back in and the machine caught fire. That spread to the wood and the furniture. They are out between 5 and 10 million dollars in inventory. My husband has never seen a spill and furniture sprayers wear masks. AND I know for a fact that Indeco has never made a large donation to the Fire Department, although they have made large donations to the schools, booster clubs, the college and many area churches, whether monetarily or by donating furniture. To the former employees, please stop being disgruntled and do something to help the employees you are so worried about. Perhaps you can stop by and help the Salvation Army pass out water.

Posted by: me again Location: belton on Dec 5, 2007 at 04:38 PM
yeah, probably true. but i aint gonna baby sit a millionairs factory. screw that. I voiced my opinion to Byron..."u don't like it then leave" he said. OSHA never ever returned my calls. I wasn't gonna cry about it day in and day out. so i left. Now, all i'm sayin is that what i feared would happen did happen. the one that could have changed things was the owner, not some little employee with no voice in the matter. at least I tried and called people about it. I ain't complaining, I'm stating the facts. You try, you fail, you move on. In Texas, you get fired for no reason and theres not a whole lot you can do about it. happens all the time to too many people.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Belton on Dec 5, 2007 at 04:17 PM
Ah, our society today. "its not my fault" "its their fault" "i tried to do something abuot it" Always blame someone else - employees can make differences - or they can run away and let someone else suffer when they know there is an issue that needs to be taken care of. If you "used" to work there - then you could have made a difference. Quit complaining. You ran from the problems.

Posted by: anonymous Location: belton on Dec 5, 2007 at 04:00 PM
I truly feel though that accidents happen. that's unavoidable. However, if the place wasn't litteraly covered in saw dust, chemicals, and was as clean as the other wood finishing factories, then the fire would have been smaller, perhaps more managable. that's what's important. that could mean the difference in so many aspects. Life, colateral damage, etc. The factory in Rogers has fire protocalls that are out of this world (much money spent). The mays had fire extinguishers. The fire sprinkler system didn't even work in half the building when I was there. I know because small fires started and we were lucky we got them out.

Posted by: melissa Location: temple on Dec 5, 2007 at 03:39 PM
It's nobodys fault accidents happen everyday. Everyone will suffer from this owners, employee's and both families. That is the problem now days everyone complaining about everything. It is a free country you make your own decisions. This is a time when everyone should pray for everyone involved from the owners to the firemen involved in this situation.

hey, when your newly married, got bills, etc. then you take the best paying job. maco payed good overtime. but I did get frustraited enough that i did leave a while after. Personally, i'm still coughing from the spray booth. Doc says my lungs are messed up from it. (there were never any masks provided.) But that can happen from any spray booth i guess. and that is my fault for not leaving sooner. funny story...I did call OSHA twice about not having masks and the Fire sprinkler system looking suspicious but they never took me seriously. that's why i worried about the employees there. no one takes anybody seriously these days.

If these people are so crazy and nuts and the place was unsafe as you say, why did you people work there

hey if i left my factory a mess all the time, and no one cited me for it, then yes it's partialy the officials fault but wouldn't it also be my fault for being the slob???

Posted by: annonymous on Dec 5, 2007 at 02:37 PM
yep. I know a bit about the donations he has given. I remember the open 55 gallon drums of UV, aceton, PMS, and laquer thinners that were just left open. There were always spills that were never cleaned up. some areas of the factory had years of buuild up of UV gunk, and Laquer that apparently no inspector never fined them about of told them to clean up. I've seen other wood manufactoring comppanies and they are SPOTLESS...MACO wasn't. Not the employees fault, it was negligence from the boss (byron at the time). The fire was an accident but the poor conditions of the factory are what fueled it. this was a couple of years ago, maybe it's been remodeled and cleaned up since then. I doubt it though. Fifty years of negligence and now it's cleaned up?...highly unlikely.

The owner and his family makes HUGE donations to lots of people, schools and different organizations and never ask for anything in return. If the fire dept. needed to make citations, it should be their fault, not the owners!!

Yes...please update video - it is a BELTON Business not a Temple Business!!!!

Posted by: anonymous Location: belton on Dec 5, 2007 at 02:13 PM
I worked there for a little while. the family was okay. byron was a nut case. And I know Lee did alot for the community he was pretty cool and he would take car of you if you needed anything. However I do know of the more shady things that went on behind the factory doors. (example: Every friday we recieved checks...the spanish hung around untill we left and were paid cash...lee didn't know about all that though. It was mostly byron...crazy drug addict. oh well.

give all our support and prayers to the workers and there family

It is increasingly harder and harder for owners to maintain an entirely safe workspace for employees. Due to the economic climate, competition, cost of training, etc. many owners pray that employees don't make ignorant mistakes and just use good common sense. It is difficult to find intelligent workers in Bell County who can survive on the pay scales offered.

My husband is out on the ranges and can see the smoke from there. I was downtown when they started evacuating the kids. What a nightmare.

I'm watching the fire from my office and right now we have burned debree falling to the ground. I hope we don't see any grass fires to add to this destruction.

Owner makes a HUGE donation to the Belton fire dept. every year. so, no citations have ever been given. go figure. Live are in danger and HE just want to pad his own pocket.

This is a time that we need to come together and not only remember the May's Family. But also the workers and their families. The May's family have done a lot for not only the Belton are but many schools and organizations in Bell County. This is a time that we need to come together and give them all our support and prayers.

Hello all. The reporter remarked about how well one could see the smoke. I first became aware of this because I went out aside and saw gray clouds moving past. I'm in Nolanville. The main plume itself is very visible from the east side of Nolanville. I have pictures I took from Nolanville. If anyone over at KWTX is interested in them, let me know and I'll send them your way.

Boy, nothing like kicking people when they are down. I have know the owner for years and they certainly do care about their staff.

FYI - update the video. The fire is in BELTON, not Temple!

the fire is still rageing at this moment fort hood, harker heights, belton, temple, and salado fire depts are on the secne

I'm not surprised this happened. I worked there for a few years and I know that their safety precautions were definantly not up to par. I worked on the paint line, managing it for 2 years. If that's were the fire started then I can certainly understand why. Conditions there were too hazardous. I don't wish to spread roumers but I know for a fact the owner and his son never cared about our safety or the enviroment in wich we worked. I hope no one was hurt.
