In a speech reminiscent of John F. Kennedy's national address concerning his Catholic religion in 1960, Romney said, if elected, " If I am fortunate to become your president, I will serve no one religion, no one group, no one cause, and no one interest. A President must serve only the common cause of the people of the United States."
Romney said calls for him to explain and justify his faith go against the wishes of the nation's founders.
At the same time, Romney decried those who would remove "any acknowledgment of God" from public life.
Romney also said religious tolerance would be a "shallow principle" if it were reserved only for certain faiths.
