Waco City Council members voted unanimously Monday afternoon to name Robin McDurham as interim mayor until a special election on May 7 to fill the post that was left vacant by the death of the city’s first elected African American mayor, Mae Jackson, earlier this month.
McDurham, flanked by her husband and children, took the oath of office immediately after the vote.
Under the terms of the city charter, McDurham has functioned as mayor since Jackson, 63, died unexpectedly at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, a day after she was admitted with flu-like symptoms and chest pains.
Waco City Council members voted last Wednesday to call a special election, which will coincide with city-school elections on May 7, to fill the vacancy.
