Local Nurse Practitioner Dies In Fiery Head-On Crash

NORTH FORT HOOD (September 15, 2011)—Former Coryell County Emergency Management Coordinator Philip Yarbrough, 48, of Belton, died Thursday morning in the fiery head-on crash between his Jeep and an 18-wheeler.

The driver of the truck, John Ray Holly, 38, of Brownwood, was flown to Scott & White Hospital in Temple after the crash.

He was in stable condition Thursday afternoon with what authorities described as minor injuries.

The accident happened just after 7 a.m. Thursday on State Highway 36 at North Fort Hood.

Investigators said they think the 18-wheeler was headed south on the highway when the northbound Jeep that Yarbrough was driving crossed into the southbound lane.

The 18-wheeler burst into flames on impact.

The fire destroyed the truck cab, but the contents of the tanker trailer did not spill.

One officer said he believes the truck was hauling milk.

Both drivers were alone in their vehicles.

Yarbrough, who was licensed nurse practitioner, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic in both directions on State Highway 36 was diverted as crews cleared the wreckage.

Firefighters from Gatesville, Flat and North Fort Hood responded.
