WACO (October 5, 2011)—A Waco man was shot in the leg Tuesday night in what police say they believe was an attempted robbery.

Police were looking Wednesday for three men who attempted to rob another man outside the Villages Apartments, in the 1100 block of N. 6th St.

Police were called just after 10 p.m. Tuesday to the scene on N. 6th St., where they found Thomas Barber, 34, suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

Barber told officers he had been approached by three men who asked him what he had.

After Barber refused to turn over his valuables and turned to walk away, one of the men struck him on the head and another man shot Barber in the leg.

The three suspects ran toward 4th St., and escaped.

Barber was taken by ambulance to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries and later released.

Police describe the men as black and in their 20s.

McLennan County sheriff’s deputies and a county helicopter joined in the search but to no avail.

Investigators have not released the names of the suspects.

A man was arrested near the scene but was not involved in the shooting, according to Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton.

Tristan T. Allen, 19, of Waco, was arrested near the scene and charged with evading detention.

Allen was being held Wednesday in the McLennan County Jail in lieu of a $1,000 bond.
