Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan Cardenas Alban was convicted of murder Friday in Baghdad in the death of an Iraqi teenager.
Alban is a member of the 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment from Fort Riley, Kan. who is assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s Task Force Baghdad.
He and two other Fort Riley soldiers were charged in death of a severely wounded Iraqi teenager.
The Iraqi was shot in the abdomen when soldiers opened fire on suspected insurgents.
Military officials say the victim was then shot to death in what they called a “mercy killing.”
Alban was convicted Friday of one count of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder.
A military jury in Baghdad sentenced him to one-year confinement, reduction to the lowest pay grade and a bad conduct discharge.
Another soldier who pleaded guilty in the shooting death was sentenced to three years confinement last month.
An Army officer is also charged in the death.
