(January 12, 2008)--President Bush says when the history of Iraq is written, the final page will say ``Victory was achieved by the United States of America for the good of the world.''
The president's comment came Saturday in a brief speech to cheering American troops in neighboring Kuwait.
He also thanked them for their ``hard work,'' which he said is ``necessary work.''
Mr. Bush is midway through an eight-day trip to the region.
He met earlier Saturday with the U.S. ambassador to Iraq and the American military commander, Gen. David Petraeus.
The president told reporters he hasn't decided on further troop withdrawals but he said if Petraeus determines the draw-down should be stopped, that would be ``fine'' with him.
Still, the president says the military is ``on track'' with a plan to withdraw some 30,000 troops from Iraq by July.
He said the surge has made Iraq a place where ``hope is returning.''
The president headed next to Bahrain, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to visit the country.
