WACO (January 25, 2012)—A tip from a resident led Waco police Tuesday evening to a pickup truck that could be the one involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a sheriff’s deputy hospitalized.
A Waco police department assistant chief sent out a message Wednesday morning that indicated detectives located a red Ford Ranger pickup truck at an address in Bellmead just after 6 p.m. Tuesday that might be the truck that struck McLennan County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyrone Caldwell on Monday.
The truck was impounded at the Waco police crime lab where technicians were performing forensic tests.
No arrests have been made.
Caldwell and a woman, who was not identified, were walking Monday morning south on Sturgis Road near the intersection of North 4th Street when the southbound pickup struck him, knocking him into a grassy area.
The driver then sped off.
The woman with whom Caldwell was walking was not injured.
Two women who were in front of the couple said they heard the impact and then heard the woman scream.
They saw the truck speeding away, but weren't able to get the license number.
Witnesses said the man driving the truck was white and was wearing a blue shirt.
Caldwell, 41, remained in critical condition Wednesday at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, but, was responding to commands and gave a thumbs-up sign Tuesday, a sheriff's office spokesman said.
A reward offered by the Sheriff's Law Enforcement Association of McLennan County for information leading to the driver's arrest had grown to $3,250 Monday morning and to almost $5,000 by late Tuesday afternoon.
An account has been set up for Caldwell at the McLennan County Employees Federal Credit Union at 215 North 5th St., Suite 224 Waco, Texas 76701.
