(January 18, 2008)--An apartment worker across the street says he saw a man holding a child toss it into the air from an overpass down into traffic.
The incident on a freeway in Honolulu has shocked the state.
The 2-and-a-half-year-old boy fell 30 feet to the expressway and is believed to have been struck by at least one car.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect was wearing green hospital scrubs and walked away.
Witnesses who followed him called police.
They arrested a 23-year-old man said to have occasionally babysat for the child.
The toddler has not been identified and word of the incident triggered panic among Honolulu parents, who flooded daycare centers with calls wondering about their children.
Investigators are looking into the suspect's mental state.
Sitting in a police car, he rocked back and forth.
And as he was escorted to a cellblock, he screamed at TV crews, "Thank you for everything."
